I cannot even begin to describe my love for this photo. I hope we are all well acquainted with The Sartorialist, Scott Schuman’s successful street style blog. His concept is great - that style isn’t in the name of a brand. It’s a personally developed, unique taste that is effortlessly pulled together. He travels the world, visiting different cities, and people watches for a living. He picks out those he finds interesting in not just what they are wearing, but how they carry themselves.
This photo was featured in December of 2009 and I found it by searching ‘hijabi sartorialist’ in Google (yea, I’m totally serious). I love everything about this picture. I love her hijab, her earrings subtly popping out (and if you knew me you’d know I am pretty anti-hijab-with-earrings. In my opinion, it rarely ever looks good). I love her chunky silver rings. I love the marigold color against the black, gown-like, abaya. I love the fitted sleeves covering her wrists. I love the multi-colored scarf dressing the bag.
What I love most about this picture though is her smile. Her smile is to die for. It’s modest, simple and refreshing. She smiles with every part of her face - her nose crinkling and her eyes squinting. It’s totally genuine and in the moment. I wish I had been there when he took the picture, to see it all in action! He captured the Muslim woman’s modesty in this photo. I am so proud that this photo represents a group of women so misunderstood. I want Muslim women to be portrayed like this. Unfettered from worldly desires, smiling because she has devoted her life to Allah (SWT).
Gah. Obsession. It’s gonna take me a while to get over this face!
